Considerations for Selecting Degree The Associate of Arts and Sciences program in General Studies with a Fine Arts specialization is designed to enable individuals to acquire the knowledge, skills, and habitat of mind necessary for responsible participation in society. As well, it allows students to take courses that are accepted in most four-year colleges and universities in a Arts focused baccalaureate curricula.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

The basic requirements of the curriculum are primarily courses considered to be in the category of general education and Art. A minimum of 61 credits is required in the General Studies degree with a Fine Arts specialization program. 25 hours are in ART prefix courses.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Southwest Virginia Community College within your first year
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses The basic requirements of the curriculum are primarily courses considered to be in the category of general education and Art. Students are urged to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major department in the college or university to which transfer is contemplated and also to consult with the counseling department at SWCC in planning this program and selecting electives. Upon satisfactory completion of the four-semester program listed, the graduate will be awarded the Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in General Studies, Fine Arts specialization.

Program Successes & Highlights The Fine Arts specialization allows for valuable internships and other opportunities to broaden skills and knowledge. Classses are small and proactive. A campus dedicated to cultural enrichment provides varied opportunities for the arts.
