Career Studies CertificateEastern Shore Community College
The Billing and Coding (BC) certificate program prepares individuals for a position in a medical office setting. Students are prepared to complete insurance and billing forms for patients and insurance companies. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Center Competency Test (NCCT) for certification. Note: Admission to the program requires a criminal background check.
Outcomes
Students will be able to: Apply Coding & Billing skills related to ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT. Apply insurance skills and knowledge related to payment and billing procedures. Apply the principles of law and ethics in performing office operations. Apply medical terminology appropriately in the workplace.

| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) for certification as a Billing and Coder. Students must complete the program within 3 years to be eligible for national certification. There is a limited time for the student to test for national certification following graduation.

| Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Part-time students should consult their faculty advisors regarding appropriate course sequences. Students will rotate through an internship. Clinical affiliates for Billing and Coding will include nursing homes, rehabilitation, the hospital, and physician’s offices. |

Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Associate degree will be awarded SDV 100 and will have their transcript evaluated for other course transfer. Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Bachelor degree from a U.S. college or university will be awarded SDV 100, ENG 111 and ENG 112. The transcript will be evaluated for other course transfer. |
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School | ESCC does not distinguish between students earning an associate degree concurrently, while in high school, or after high school graduation. |
