PHYS201: University Physics
PHYS201: University Physics
University Physics is a vector calculus-based introductory physics course for engineering and physical science majors. Topics covered in PHYS 201 include kinematics, Newton's laws, energy and momentum conservation, and rotational motion. Topics covered in PHYS 202 include thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism. Special emphasis is placed on developing problem solving skills using multiple representations. Extensive use is made of microcomputer-based laboratories. Students taking PHYS 201-PHYS 202 cannot receive credit for PHYS 101-PHYS 102.

Learning Outcomes

- Understand","describe","and apply the basic concepts and principles of classical mechanics.
- Solve physics problems that involve motion and forces in one and two dimensions.
- Analyze and solve physics problems that involve the application of conservation principles.
- Apply the tolls of differential and integral calculus to proofs","derivations","and problems in physics.
- Conduct careful experiments","collect and analyze data","and draw scientific conclusions from laboratory activities.
- Cultivate their own physical intuition about situations involving motion and develop an understanding of what it means “to think like a physicist.”
- Describe the historical development of physical science leading up to the so-called “Scientific Revolution","” and identify the contributions of major historical scientists to the development of classical physics.
