CHEM110: Concepts of Chemistry
Chemical concepts are discussed in the context of current societal issues. Completion of CHEM 110 together with CHEM 110L will satisfy four credits of the core requirement in natural sciences. This course does not satisfy the prerequisites for advanced courses in chemistry and cannot be combined with CHEM 101 or CHEM 102 to complete degree requirements.

- Using a basic chemical vocabulary","describe the chemical and/or physical origin of the six major criteria pollutants","
- Discuss the major environmental legislative initiatives and treaties relating to air and water quality","ozone hole formation and climate change.
- Relate the interaction of molecules with different types of elctromagnetic radiation to climate change and the ozone hole.
- Perform basic chemical mole calculations and conversions.
- Discuss water quality and acid rain in terms of the physical and chemical properties of water.
- Describe the origin of fossil fuels and discuss the supply limitations and alternatives to fossil fuels.
- Apply basic principles nuclear energy generation to a discussion of the risks and benefits of nuclear energy versus conventional fossil fuels.
- Describe simple chemical reactions behind the generation of polymers and relate polymer structure to function or describe the function of various drugs in terms of their molecular structure and organic functional group.
