Southwest Virginia Community College's Certificate in Practical Nursing offers the training and support you need to earn a license as a practical nurse. You can complete this nursing certificate in just four semesters, developing the knowledge and skills to pass the LPN licensure exam and enter the work force as a health care professional. Designed for students who are new to nursing, our nursing certificate program provides a supportive learning environment that combines classroom instruction with hands-on training. You'll work with experienced nursing instructors who will take a personal interest in your education and help you meet the challenges that new nurses often face.
Outcomes
Learning Objectives: The PN Program uses the QSEN Competencies as its conceptual framework and all objectives for this course that is more specifically outlined in each specific unit focuses on at least one of the following 6 competencies: 1. Patient-Centered Care 2. Teamwork and Collaboration 3. Evidence-Based Practice 4. Quality Improvement 5. Informatics 6. Safety Each competency has specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes the nurse should demonstrate to deliver safe, effective, quality care. Each unit will have specific objectives that will correlate to the program outcomes and with the QSEN competencies.

Considerations for Selecting Degree | Our program is an 18 month 4 consecutive semester program that is offered usually face to face classes. The classes are offered in the evenings beginning at 5pm and the clinical time is usually completed Wednesday through Sunday. Students are required to complete a minimum of 400 clinical hours in various nursing disciplines. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam for licensure as a LPN. |
Program Requirement Notes | Program Requirement Notes Admission Requirements: Student must complete a separate practical nursing application before deadline of March 6. Student should submit an official high school transcript and official transcripts from any colleges or universities they have attended previously. If student completes the GED they will need to submit their scores. The student should have completed one year of biology with a lab with a grade of "C"or better, demonstrate competency in math and English via the Virginia Placement Test or as determined in the Direct Placement Policy, place in ENG 101 or completion of ENG 101 or higher with a grade of "C" or higher, demonstrate proficiency in math modules 1-3, MDE 10, or eligible to enroll or completion of MTH 154 or higher with a grade of "C" or better. The student should have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher based on their last school attended whether high school or college with at least 12 credits. The student will also be required to take the HESI admission test in math and reading comprehension and scored proficient in these areas. Once in the program the student must pass all nursing courses with a grade of "C" or better. A "C" in our program is an 80%. Student must also complete all of the requirements of the Virginia Board of Nursing program completion requirements that includes a minimum of 400 clinical hours in all of the areas specified. Students are required to pass a competency simulation and score a minimum score of 900 on the HESI Exit Examination to pass PNE 145 and to graduate the program. |

The practical nursing program courses must be completed in sequence with the exception of SDV 100 and Eng 101.
