AAS in Medical Laboratoy Technology

Associate of Applied Science
Central Virginia Community College

The Medical Laboratory Technology degree is designed for the student who desires training in medical laboratory technology. Upon completion of the program and certification, the student may seek a career as a medical laboratory technician in hospitals, doctors’ offices, health departments, and private laboratories. CVCC’s program is offered in cooperation with Centra. CVCC awards the AAS degree and Centra maintains accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, Illinois 60018.

Individuals must meet with a CVCC academic counselor, submit a program application, and schedule an interview with program faculty. Admission is competitive and limited to 10 students per academic year. Admitted students are required to submit a background check along with health and immunization records. Students are required to complete all first year courses prior to enrolling in MDL courses, earn a grade of “C” or better in all science and mathematics courses, and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Eligible students must begin MDL courses in the fall semester, attend full-time, and earn a grade of “C” or better in each to continue into the spring semester and graduate. Students are responsible for transportation to clinical sites and purchasing required uniforms.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Students are required to submit a background check along with health and immunization records. A clinical rotation is required by NAACLS to sit for the certification exam, but not to graduate from program

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion For students transferring to CVCC with an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution, SDV 100 credit is awarded. Additional coursework will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Transfer credit will be awarded for equivalent coursework from regionally accredited institutions for which the student earned a grade of C or higher.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School For students transferring to CVCC with an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution, SDV 100 credit is awarded. Additional coursework will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Transfer credit will be awarded for equivalent coursework from regionally accredited institutions for which the student earned a grade of C or higher.
Credit for Prior Learning CVCC awards credit for qualifying scores in AP, CLEP, DANTES, and institutional challenge exams. Credit may also be granted for military service and formal learning experiences.
